If you are missing a single tooth or multiple teeth, dental implants may be just what you have been looking for! Dental implants provide a permanent solution for the replacement of missing teeth. They restore your ability to chew food, improve the appearance of your teeth, and restore your confidence.
What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are extremely safe and have been used in dentistry for nearly 40 years. Implants are small titanium posts which replace the roots of missing teeth. Once healed, implants provide a strong foundation upon which a crown or “cap” may be placed. Implant teeth look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. Best of all, implant teeth are permanent and can last a lifetime with proper care. Austin implant dentists Dr. Dan Holtzclaw and Dr. Fritz Hinze are board certified periodontists (specialty trained dentists) who have successfully placed thousands of dental implants.
Are dental implants better than dental bridges?
Modern dental implants have success rates exceeding 95% and have a number of benefits over traditional treatments such as dental bridges. With a bridge, your dentist shaves down teeth next to your missing tooth to create space for the restoration. In addition to removing perfectly good tooth structure, shaving teeth down for a bridge may irritate the nerves of the teeth leading to future root canals. With dental implants, the teeth next to the missing tooth are not touched. This eliminates unnecessary trauma to the adjacent teeth and the possible need for expensive and painful root canals.
Austin Implant Dentists
There are at least 100 Austin Implant Dentists. So, who should you trust to place your dental implant? First and foremost, you need to consider the training of the dentist placing your dental implant. Specialty trained dentists such as Periodontists and Oral Surgeons attend an additional 3-4 years beyond dental school where they receive intense training in the surgical placement of dental implants. While many general dentists advertise that they place dental implants, most have not had formal specialty training in this procedure. Did you know that most general dentists receive very little to no training in the surgical placement of dental implants during dental school? A number of dentists attend weekend training programs to become “certified” to place dental implants. This weekend continuing education training pales in comparison to the extensive training specialty trained dentists such as Periodontists and Oral Surgeons receive during their 3-4 year residencies.
The practice of Lone Star Periodontics & Dental Implants has two extremely qualified implant surgeons to serve the residents of the Austin metroplex. Dr. Holtzclaw is one of the most experienced and qualified implant dentists in Austin and all of Texas. In addition to being a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, he is one of the few Diplomates of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) in Texas. ICOI Diplomate status is the highest honor available from this international implant organization and is only provided to clinicians who pass a rigorous oral examination and present over 50 carefully reviewed long term implant cases of increasing levels of difficulty. Dr. Holtzclaw is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Implant and Advanced Clinical Dentistry, one of the largest dental implant journals in the world. JIACD is read in 174 countries and has a circulation exceeding 100,000.
Like Dr. Holtzclaw, Dr. Hinze is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and has placed thousands of dental implants during his career. He has lectured on the topic of dental implants to numerous dental groups in Texas including the Women’s Dental Society of Austin and many private study clubs.
Dental Implant Costs
One of the biggest concerns people have with dental implants is their cost. When looking at advertisements for dental implants, you need to be careful because some ads can be very misleading. Remember what your mama told you, if something sounds too good to be true…it probably is too good to be true. Advertisements touting very cheap dental implants often do not include the full cost of the complete dental implant. The process of receiving a dental implant involves multiple stages including surgical placement of the dental implant, uncovering the implant at a later date, attaching an abutment, and finally securing a crown. The implant surgeon will typically place the dental implant while a different dentist will deliver the abutment and crown. In cases where offices advertise cheap dental implants, I have seen instances where the patient is nickeled and dimed with additional charges that make the final cost of the implant surgery very expensive. All offices pay similar amounts for dental implants when they purchase them from the manufacturer. If someone is advertising extremely cheap dental implants, be wary of additional hidden costs. Reputable dental implant specialists have one single cost for the implant surgery process. If your implant dentist is hitting you with multiple little charges for your implant surgery, be careful! That “low cost” dental implant may end up costing you much more than you bargained for.
The average cost of a dental implant typically runs around $2,000 for the anesthesia, surgery, implant, and healing abutment. This may vary from office to office depending on the type of implant used by the surgeon. Like cars, some implants are Kias while others are Mercedes. Higher quality implants cost more than knock off implants. Also, many offices offer periodic specials on implant surgery, so be sure to ask your office if they are running any discounts. Remember, if the dental office you are working with is hitting you with multiple charges for your implant process for each step, be wary! Add up all of the charges. By the time you have paid for all of the steps of the implant process, your “cheap” dental implant often ends up costing more than those placed by dental specialists that charge one all-inclusive fee for dental implants.
